The Importance of Choosing a Trained Newborn Photographer
Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most special moments, and capturing those early days through newborn photography is something many parents cherish forever. But when choosing a newborn photographer, there’s one crucial factor that should never be overlooked—training in newborn safety.
Why Newborn Photography Training Matters
Newborn photography is a highly delicate art that requires more than just a camera and props—it requires a deep understanding of infant physiology and behaviour. Babies are incredibly fragile in their first few weeks of life, and posing them incorrectly can lead to injury, restricted airways, or impaired blood flow. A trained photographer knows how to spot signs of distress such as discolouration, laboured breathing, or limb discomfort, and will always prioritise your baby's wellbeing over getting 'the shot.'
Unfortunately, newborn photography is an unregulated industry, which means that anyone can pick up a camera and offer sessions without formal training. This is why it’s so important to do your research and choose someone who has taken the time to invest in newborn safety training. Your baby deserves to be in safe, knowledgeable hands at all times.
Fully Trained in Newborn Safety
Your baby’s safety is my absolute top priority. I have attended both a group workshop and a one-on-one training session with one of the country’s top newborn photographers, learning how to safely pose babies in all the positions I offer. This includes specific training in safe wrapping techniques—ensuring your baby’s limbs are gently and correctly positioned to avoid discomfort or restricted circulation. Every pose and wrap I use is chosen and executed with your baby’s comfort and safety in mind.
While I am trained in a wide variety of poses, I do not offer the ‘froggy pose,’ as this requires very specific training, and I choose only to practice poses I have been fully trained in.
Behind-the-Scenes: How a Newborn Session Works
When you bring your little one to my studio, the entire session is designed around their comfort and well-being. My studio is kept at a warm, soothing temperature, and I use gentle posing techniques that allow babies to naturally settle into positions they find comfortable. Every movement is slow and mindful, ensuring your baby feels safe and relaxed throughout the session.
My Gentle, Baby-Led Approach
Every baby is unique, and I always follow their lead. If a baby doesn’t settle into a certain pose comfortably, I won’t force it. Instead, I adjust to what makes them feel secure and content. This ensures a stress-free experience for both baby and parents, resulting in natural and beautifully captured moments.
What to Look for in a Newborn Photographer
If you’re considering booking a newborn session, here are some key things to look for when choosing a photographer:
- Professional Training – Have they completed newborn safety training?
- Insurance & Safety Precautions – Are they fully insured?
- Experience – Do they have experience working with newborns?
- Portfolio of Safe Posing – Do their images show comfortable, safely posed babies?
- Studio Environment – Is the studio space designed with newborns in mind?
Parental Involvement & Baby’s Comfort
While I work solo in the studio, your baby’s safety is never compromised. I’m fully trained in newborn posing and safety, and always within arm’s reach of your little one—but for added peace of mind, I may occasionally ask a parent to sit nearby during certain poses. Babies can jolt or startle due to their natural reflexes, and having a parent close by offers an extra layer of security during those moments. I’ll guide you clearly and calmly through exactly what to do—nothing complicated, just an extra hand next to baby for gentle reassurance for your baby’s safety.
During your session, parents are always welcome to be nearby. I encourage you to relax while I gently pose and settle your baby, but you’re more than welcome to be involved if you wish. Your little one’s safety and comfort are always my focus, and I take every precaution to make sure they feel secure throughout.
FAQ
What happens if my baby doesn’t settle into any poses?
Sometimes, a baby simply doesn’t enjoy being undressed and posed—and that is completely okay! If a baby is uncomfortable with being posed, we move on to wrapped images instead. Your baby will be safely and gently wrapped up, which actually mimics the snug position they were in inside the womb. Many babies find this incredibly comforting and almost always fall asleep. We don’t start with wrapped poses because when babies are unwrapped, they often startle and wake up, so we always finish with the wrapped images to keep them settled.
What should my baby wear to the session?
A simple babygrow is perfect. Once you arrive, your baby will be stripped down to their nappy for the session—but don’t worry, the room is fully heated to a warm and comfortable temperature for them.
How long does a newborn session take?
The length of a session entirely depends on the baby and how long they take to settle into each pose. We go at their pace. Typically, sessions last around 2 hours, but they can range anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours, depending on how baby is feeling on the day.
