Why I Charge for Model Calls — and Why That’s Okay!
I’ve been meaning to share a little more behind-the-scenes about my model calls — what they are, why I do them, and most importantly, why I choose to charge a small fee.
Every now and then, I run model calls as a way to trial something new. It might be a fresh setup, a different editing style, a new prop, or even a seasonal idea I want to bring to life. These sessions are exciting for me creatively, but also incredibly important for my business and how it grows. They help shape what I offer to families moving forward.
I also often use images from model calls in my portfolio, website, or social media — so if you love the idea of being part of shaping the creative side of my business, model calls are a lovely way to do that.
And I love doing them — because they bring in brand new faces. New parents, little ones I’ve never met, and families who maybe didn’t know about me before. I adore welcoming new people into my space. It’s always a joy to meet someone for the first time and help them feel at home in front of my camera.
But here’s the thing — just because a session is called a “model call” doesn’t mean the work behind it is free.
There are still real costs involved
Even with a lower price, I’m still:
- Setting up the studio (sometimes for hours),
- Preparing props, backdrops, and outfits,
- Paying for materials, insurance, rent, editing software etc…
- Spending time editing and delivering professional-quality images.
None of that is free to me. And more than that, it’s not just about cost — it’s about energy, time, and care. I pour the same amount of heart into a model call session as I do for any other shoot. Whether someone is paying full price or a small model call fee, they’re still receiving a piece of my craft and a full experience.
I want to be fair to my loyal clients, too
Many of my returning clients have been with me through so many milestones — from bump to baby, first birthdays to family portraits. They trust me again and again, and they invest in the work I create.
If I gave model call sessions away entirely for free — especially to people who have never worked with me before — I’d feel like I was doing a disservice to those loyal families who’ve supported me from the beginning.
I deeply value new clients and always want to be welcoming and accessible. But I also want to honour the families who return year after year. Charging a small fee for model calls is part of finding that balance.
It's about commitment — on both sides
I’ve also learned over time that putting even a small cost to a model call helps ensure that everyone who books is genuinely committed. Free sessions, unfortunately, often come with no-shows or last-minute cancellations. That’s time lost that I could have given to another family, or spent with my own loved ones.
By charging a small amount, I’m asking for mutual respect — and I promise to give just as much back. I’ll always deliver images I’m proud of, and I’ll always aim to give more value than what you pay for.
You still receive a full experience
Even though these sessions are discounted, I want you to know — I don’t cut corners. You still get my full attention, professional editing, and a safe, comfortable environment. Whether it’s your first time in front of my camera or your tenth, I want you to walk away with images you truly love.
So if you’ve ever wondered why I charge for model calls — this is why.
It’s never about being unfair or greedy. It’s about sustainability, fairness, and respect — for my work, my regular clients, and the new families I hope to meet.
I’ll always keep these sessions affordable, and I’ll always be honest about what’s included.
If you’d like to be considered for a future model call, feel free to message me or keep an eye on my socials — I always post there first. I’d love to create something beautiful with you.
Thank you for reading — and for supporting small businesses like mine, where every session matters more than you know.
Warmly,
Azaria
